CPAC, Affiliated Foods try for Guinness World Record

In an effort to set the Guinness World Record for most pounds of potatoes displayed at a single venue, approximately 80 tons of potatoes were piled into a 12-foot-high "mountain range" at Firelake Discount Foods in Shawnee, OK, by shipper members of the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee and Affiliated Foods Inc.

The display, built entirely by hand, was set up Feb. 15, with several CPAC members taking part in the stacking.

"Partnering with Colorado Potatoes was a no-brainer," said Miguel Herrera, director of the produce department for Affiliated Foods. "More than 90 percent of the potatoes sold at our member stores come from Colorado, so it makes sense for us to attempt the Guinness World Record together."

The official record attempt used 60,000 pounds of potatoes, or roughly four semi-truck loads. When stacked, the spuds resembled a 12-foot high mountain range reminiscent of their Colorado roots.

After the displayed was measured and the specs sent to the Guinness World Records, Firelake Discount Foods customers began purchasing the record-attempting potatoes, which were accompanied by potato recipes created by Oklahoma chef, Kale Blackmon.

"We are thrilled to be a part of this monumental attempt," said Jim Ehrlich, executive director of CPAC.

Colorado-grown potatoes are sold in nearly all of Affiliated Foods' 785 member stores in seven states spanning from Arizona to Arkansas.
