Brooks Tropicals announces staff promotions in food safety and research and development

"Clara Sarmiento, assistant to the president [Pal Brooks] of Brooks Tropicals, will take on the additional responsibility of food-safety manager for all of Brooks Tropicals," said Mary Ostlund, director of marketing for the Homestead, FL-based company. "Clara will lead the current team in Belize and Homestead in this ever-growing area of importance."

Ms. Sarmiento, she added, will continue with her current responsibilities in purchasing and project management in Homestead, as well as inventory control in Belize for Fruta Bomba and Belize Fruit Packers.

She holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Pontificia Javerianan University in Cali, Columbia, and a master's degree in business administration in international business from Saint John's University in New York.

Also taking on new responsibilities at Brooks Tropicals is Armando Monterroso, the head of the company's research and development department.

"Armando will take on the additional responsibility of managing the pest and disease department at the Brooks Tropicals' subsidiary, Fruta Bomba in Belize, CA," said Ms. Ostlund. "He is now responsible for the creation, implementation and monitoring of all research and development programs."

Mr. Monterroso holds an agronomist engineer degree from San Carlos University in Guatemala, and he has a master's degree in vegetable crops and integrated pest management from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

"Armando also has a research and production post-graduate degree on legume crops from the Asian Vegetable Research Center in Taiwan, Republic of China," said Ms. Ostlund. "Brooks Tropicals is happy to announce these promotions to two hard working and valuable employees."
