At least that was the view of Sonny Mayugba of Augustine Ideas, who was the keynote speaker at the Fresh Produce & Floral Council's Northern California luncheon, held here Thursday, Feb. 16.

Mr. Mayugba supported his point of view with some pretty impressive statistics. He said that one in 11 people in the world use Facebook; there are 140 million tweets per day on Twitter; and every minute of every day, 48 hours of YouTube videos are uploaded to that site. The social media expert said that people are "living on the Internet" and companies better be there if they want to be successful.

He came armed with research showing that Facebook in fact drives commerce. Users of Facebook who "Like" a product or are directed to a product or service by their friends are much more likely to become consumers of that product than others on the Internet without a Facebook account.

Mr. Mayugba said that big companies already know this, and he used numerous examples of corporations, such as Southwest Airlines and Walmart, that have greatly increased their on-line sales by having a company Facebook and Twitter account and having a presence on YouTube.

But he cautioned the audience about using Internet marketing as an afterthought or without the care they put into their other marketing efforts. He said that when a firm makes the commitment to get on the Internet and get involved with their customers in that venue, they have to treat the effort with the same dedication and creative energy that goes into all of their other marketing concepts.

"Don't just post stuff," he said. "Create traffic" by being creative.

The luncheon, which also featured Greg Corrigan of Raley's Supermarkets as the master of ceremonies, drew a crowd in excess of the 225 who preregistered, as there were many walk-ins the day of the event.
