SAN JOSE, Calif. – Fresh Produce Locator, a new website created to make the procurement process of selling and buying produce easier and more efficient, is eager to welcome its newest selling members. The latest members to join are Adams Bros., Chieftan Harvesting, Inc., Haury Farms, Marchella, LLC, Royal Rose, LLC and The Nunes Co., Inc.

“These sellers bring the products needed in order to provide our buying members the variety they are looking for,” said David Castillo, President and Founder of Fresh Produce Locator. Currently buyers can find main stream products such as carrots, green onions, lettuce and grapes to specialty items like radicchio, frisee and treviso, just to name a few. “Royal Rose is please to be a new member of Fresh Produce Locator. We have been impressed with how easy the site is to use, as well as with the customer service and site support,” said Emily Lyons, Marketing Manager, Royal Rose, LLC.

Selling members post their products and pricing on the site for the more than 180 buying members to choose from. The focus behind the site’s development was to link buyers to the product they need according to the item, size, packaging, location and best available price. Currently, without this system, the process can be cumbersome and entails sifting through numerous price sheets on a daily basis to find the product needed. Fresh Produce Locator will find the product at the best price amongst its selling members with just a few clicks. In order for a buyer to gain access to the site they must be accredited according to industry credit services standards, such as Red Book Credit Services. Sellers can post prices or price sheets with confidence knowing that the site is secure and only buyers can see their pricing. The site also allows sellers to post organic and hot deal items. There are no online transactions, transaction fees or bidding on the site. As an additional feature a Services Section allows companies that serve the agricultural industry to  advertise their products and services to anyone visiting the site.

FreshProduceLocator.com picking up steam
-The Produce News-

By John Groh

Launched in August with the idea to better facilitate purchasing transactions between produce buyers and sellers, freshproducelocator.com has experienced a recent surge in popularity, according to its developer.

The site has added numerous features and now lists 37 buyer members. Buyers on the site include some of the very large in the industry, such as Indianapolis Fruit Co., Pro-Act, Ben E. Keith, Save Mart Supermarkets, Stater Bros. and Supervalu.

Among the features on the site are the ability to hone in on "hot deals" listed by suppliers, the ability to search for product using numerous criteria, an area for organic product, a “services” area that has links to transportation and equipment providers, and links to news stories from The Produce News.

Site developer David Castillo said that he conceived the site after speaking with produce buyers and sellers and discussing the pros and cons of how business is currently conducted.

“Instead of a company having an individual pound the phones all day looking for the best deal, they can go on to our site and get a list of who has what and at what price,” said Mr. Castillo. “And they can search for product by shipping location, variety, size, weight, pack size or a number of other criteria. Also, suppliers are able to list product as a 'hot deal' on the site, which attracts the attention of the buyers.”

Membership is free to buyers, and a current introductory offer allows sellers to join for a flat fee of $1,999 per year, or about $166 per month, said Mr. Castillo.

“Some of the suppliers actually told me I was too low [in price],” he said. “They can easily waste $4,000 or $5,000 worth of product that they can’t sell, and this will enable them to move the product they are long on.”

Mr. Castillo also stressed that the site is secure, meaning that only buyers can view the price lists posted by sellers. This eliminates the worry that sellers will use the site to undercut price or manipulate the market. The site does not offer on-line transactions; rather it provide buyers with a direct link to a seller’s sales team.

“And we only accept members that are rated highly by one of the financial reporting agencies, like the Blue Book,” he said. “I verify that as well as the status of a company as being a buyer or seller.”

Mr. Castillo said that while promotions have thus far been limited to word of mouth and personal contact, he is setting up accounts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to further promote the service to the industry.

An online produce selling and buying service has added some new features and is expanding the number of buyers it serves.

In providing real time access to products and services, freshproducelocator.com now has a Hot Deals section that allows sellers to move overstocked produce. The service is also moving into social media.

The site, which started in August, has 36 buyers including Pro*Act, Monterey, Calif.; Ben E. Keith Co., Fort Worth, Texas; Indianapolis Fruit Co. Inc., Indianapolis; Garden Fresh Distribution Services, Richwood, N.J.; Save Mart Supermarkets Modesto, Calif.; and Stater Bros. Markets, Colton, Calif.

Founder David Castillo said he has started focusing on higher credit-rated companies.

“Most of the time in this industry, if you’re a grower-shipper and packer, you will have stringent rules on who you will sell to,” he said. “They don’t want to sell to just anyone. Qualified buyers bring a lot more validity to the deal because of the tough times.”

Castillo, president of San Jose-Calif.-based Castle Enterprises, doing business as FreshProduceLocator.com, is setting up Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts so buyers and sellers can follow his site and learn more about how it operates, he said.

In December, FreshProduceLocator.com was recognized as one of the top ten innovators of the year by Red Book Credit Services, Lenexa, Kan., a division of Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Vance Publishing Corp., which owns The Packer.

The site, which allows sellers to display their price sheets, does not charge transaction fees nor offer online biddings. It helps buyers track trends to see how products are moving in the industry depending on factors such as pricing, shipping location and packaging, Castillo said. The site also features an organic section.

New website designed to ease produce purchasing

A former produce buyer has developed an online service designed to make the selling and buying process less complicated.

David Castillo launched FreshProduceLocator.com on Aug. 9.

The site allows buyers to purchase the commodities they need via item, size, packaging, growing location and best available price.

Castillo, president of San Jose-Calif.-based Castle Enterprises, which does business as FreshProduceLocator.com, is a former buyer for Mineral King Produce LLC, Visalia, Calif., Council Foods, Lindsey, Calif., and Richpeel Garlic Co., Hanford, Calif.

“There is nothing more grueling than going through 30-40-60-100 price sheets a day on each individual item to source products from the best areas for the best price,” he said. “As I’ve always been into simplifying processes, I sat down one day and thought there must be an easier way for someone to go ahead and source this product out. I have always felt there should be a go-to site to find these things versus sorting through all the price sheets on my desk.”

The site allows sellers, which include grower-shippers, brokers and distributors, to securely post their price sheets that are viewable only by buyers.

Sellers can also post organic and overstocked items.

Buyers can customize the commodities they regularly purchase which are shown through information such as carton size, seller sales and cooler contact information.

A search engine automatically organizes the commodities by price, Castillo said.

A services section advertises allied industry company products and services.

The site has collaborated with Red Book Credit Services, Lenexa, Kan., a division of Vance Publishing, which owns The Packer.

“Coupling our industry leading credit information in a real-time and highly integrated way just makes sense,” said AnnMarie Wills, Red Book Credit Services’ general manager. “Red Book Credit Services is committed to providing this industry with critical credit-decisioning data in easy to use and highly actionable ways.”

Buyers who have not established credit ratings wishing to access the site can clink on a link that goes to Red Book Credit Services to obtain membership.

Castillo said he has signed up several grower-shippers, including Simonian Fruit Co., Fowler, Calif., George Amaral Ranches Inc., Salinas, Calif., and King Fresh Produce LLC, Dinuba, Calif.

Buyers can access the site for free, he said.
